Is Aravrit a work in progress?

Is Aravrit a work in progress?

We are kicking off a new blog post series of Q&As on Aravrit. Its progress, challenges, inspiration and much more. Ready for our first question? Is Aravrit, the hybrid writing system which combines Hebrew and Arabic is still a work in progress project or is it finished? The short answer is yes, it’s still in progress.

This project started seven years ago and it’s still in progress since then. Actually I don’t even think it will ever be a finished project. The way the letters are combined and how it looks is more or less defined by now, but what’s still developing and evolving is what is coming out of it: new directions, new inspirations, new people looking at it. It’s where experimental typography meets readability.

If we use the analogy of Aravrit as a tree, the stem of the tree is the basis of the project: the hard-core typeface design. It’s the concept of the letters merging together. The other parts of the tree: the branches, the leaves, the fruit: they are the developments of the projects.

And these things are still in progress and they will continue to develop for as long as this project is around. Some of these branches grow to places I’ve never thought they’d go to, and some of these branches are getting cut in the middle because of one reason or another. Sometimes, the growing fruit will fall into the ground, nourish it and create new plants.

So much is unknown. What I do know is that I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Aravrit. It’s definitely still a work in progress.
